Action Research About Development of Student's Artistic Form of Expression by Conceptual Art Activities

Since the 1960's, rapid changes and transformations in the field of art have been experienced in the light of the technological and social developments that have been experienced, and the expression forms and thought forms of today's art have differentiated. With this change in the art, there was a need for a new structuring and planning in the field of art education. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate how students' original expression patterns in artistic production have been improved through conceptual art practices. The research was designed with an action research model. Participants of the research consist of 12 undergraduate students who took Graphic Design lesson in Fine Arts Education Department of Anadolu University in the fall semester of 2012-2013 and the researcher conducting the course. Data were collected from class video records, semi-structured interviews, student diary, researcher diary, student objects/products and social media interactions. Data of the research were resolved through thematic analysis method. According to findings, it has been seen that the students have developed awareness of their surroundings by experiencing the research and inquiry process. The students have changed their conceptions of art and their distant attitudes to contemporary art and have tried to make meaning. From the research findings, students can be taught various artistic approaches such as art history, visual culture, digital art and contemporary art practices.
Efficient Shared Path Protection Routing for Survivable Optical WDM Networks

Sustainability of the service continuity provided in the optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with dynamic traffic environment requires effective protection schemes in the connections. Various approaches have been introduced for path protection and wavelength assignment to ensure survivability in WDM networks. In this paper, we propose a two-step algorithm to designate dedicated-path and shared-path protection schemes. The heuristic-based algorithm utilizes a global labeling which considers service time and line protection information. Thus, the algorithm aims to increase resource utilization by improving the efficiency of shared path protection. The proposed algorithm is applied to USNET and EuropeNet networks and performance analysis in terms of blocking probability and resource utilization is carried out.
New Generation University: A Model Proposal

In the last quarter century, since the university is the main source of the human resources required by the knowledge society, structural and functional restructuring efforts of the university institution have been increasing to strengthen the positive impact on economic growth and social development through education and research activities. Today, the Anglo-Saxon and the Far East countries have the most successful university examples in this context; European universities come second in performance, although there are tremendous differences among member countries. Being a candidate for the European Union membership and as a member of the Council of Europe as the first signatory states of the Cultural Convention; implementation of reforms in the European Higher Education Area is obligatory for Turkey. In this study, an organizational and operating model has been developed in line with the European university reform agenda. CoHE's university approach which focuses on thematic and regional development has also been taken into consideration. Five innovations can be mentioned in terms of organizational and functional configuration of the model: (i) Profile of graduate and mission of the new generation university in the fields of education, research and community services, (ii) Policy development and implementation offices, (iii) University ecosystem consultation and steering committee and other committees and boards, (iv) Concept courses and branded courses, (v) Recognition of prior learning, (vi) Coop-education and solution partnerships.
A Post-Occupancy Evaluation Model Based on Spatio-Temporal Mapping Method for University Outdoor Spaces

Not only do university campuses consist of a variety of social and educational buildings, they also create an integrated system with their outdoor spaces and furniture, recreation and landscape areas. Outdoors have the potential to create social interaction, rest and relaxation, recreation, exchange of ideas and a strong sense of ownership and belonging. Creating a common identity for social life by enabling people to communicate and socialize with each other is the most important function of outdoor spaces. However, although the rationality of external spaces is designed, it is possible to use other than what is expected in practice. The relationship between the external spaces and the building groups, the adequacy, the duration of use, the accessibility and the interaction of the physical environment should be examined with a holistic approach to understand the difference between expectations and reality. In order to identify user needs in outdoor spaces as a way to assess if human use and design intentions are in fact successful, post occupancy evaluation (POE) is recommended as the most significant advanced method. Unfortunately, although studies on the evaluation of indoor spaces have been increasing day by day, there is no comprehensive study of POE that can be applied to the outdoor spaces, especially in university campuses. In this study, a POE method which discusses the variables that affect the use of outdoor space and the interaction between these variables is introduced. The proposed method was applied in a suburban university campus and the results were evaluated in terms of outdoor use.
Territorial Stigmatization as a Process of Bio Politics: The Case of Hacihusrev

This paper discusses the stigmatization of Hacihusrev Neighborhood as a criminal area utilizing concepts borrowed from Agamben's understanding of bio-politics and the territorial stigmatization of Wacquant. The stigmatization of Hacihusrev Neighborhood, where peripatetic Roma groups as homo sacers reduced to 'bare life' had settled, occurred by means of the popular narrative produced by the mass media of the era. The manipulative representation of the social transformation occurring in the neighborhood turned it into a place where the exception became the rule. There are two different late-peripatetic groups in Hacihusrev Neighborhood. Roma tobacco workers, who came to the neighborhood during the Turk-Greek Population Exchange of 1923-24, had had an intense experience of waged occupation due to massive labor demand in the geography from which they came, late Ottoman Macedonia. Roma tobacco workers thus became a part of a mainstream social process, participating in waged occupations and in the leftist politics of the era and so pushed the limits of the area in which the peripatetics had been placed historically by means of legal pretexts and social relations. The other late-peripatetics, who came to the neighborhood mainly after 1950 from Bursa and its surroundings, had almost no opportunity for waged occupations. Excluded from the mainstream social relations, they were forced to be a part of criminal activities. Popular crime narratives in the media in the 1960s increased the visibility of the late-peripatetics from Bursa and rendered the Roma tobacco workers invisible. Thus, Hacihusrev Neighborhood was perceived as the natural habitat of criminal suspects. The stigma that surrounded the neighborhood in this process imprisoned the Roma tobacco workers in the very area where they had partly escaped before and their historical distinctiveness as a productive force became less certain. This paper aims to reveal the mechanisms of the stigmatization process through content analysis of the related news published between 1930-2009 in Milliyet and Cumhuriyet newspapers, the review of relevant literature, and the data collected during field research.
Work Ethics in the History of Turkish Culture in Terms of Its Effect on Work Values: Examples from Divan-I Hikmet

Literary works are concrete reflections of the collective memory in societies in terms of portraying perception, attitudes, and behaviors. They have also taken on the function of carrying the cultural elements they were born into across time and space. Building on this reality, the impact of work ethics on work values in Turkish cultural history has been attempted to be revealed through a qualitative content analysis of Ahmed Yesevi's Divan-& imath; Hikmet, which has been spiritually significant in the Turkish Islamic world for centuries. The analysis indicates that the fundamental qualities dedicated to becoming a complete human in the Divan-& imath; Hikmet, which is the spiritual education of a person on the path to becoming a complete human, correspond to the following characteristics in the working life: i) Upholding justice, ii) valuing continuous learning, iii) working with passion, iv) being reliable, v) being tolerant, vi) showing perseverance, vii) being loving, viii) being optimistic, and xix) being helpful. Thus, it is suggested that within the context of Turkish culture, the principles of a complete human can serve as a guide for work ethics, shaping and influencing the framework of work values.
