A New Approach for Increasing the Photocatalytic Activity of Titanium Dioxide in Water Hydrolysis
(Pleiades Publishing Ltd, 2026) Kasapbasi, Emine Esra; Kirci, Serap; Hatipoglu, Arzu
Photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting is a sustainable and promising green technology. Producing clean hydrogen fuel using sunlight will significantly benefit the environment. TiO2 photocatalysts can split water into H-2 and O-2 under sunlight. However, the wide band gap of TiO2 (similar to 3.2 eV) limits its activity to UV-light, making it inactive under visible light. Doping with cations has been shown to enhance visible-light absorption and affect the photocatalytic properties of TiO2. Despite extensive research, there is still no clear explanation for how different cations influence its activity under solar irradiation. In this study, the non-defective anatase (001) surface was modeled using finite, neutral, stoichiometric cluster models derived from bulk anatase. Doped models were created by substituting one Ti atom with a cation, and their positions were optimized for minimum energy. Calculations were carried out using Density Functional Theory (DFT) with the B3LYP hybrid functional and the 6-31G(d) basis set. All dopants were found to reduce the TiO2 band gap, improving visible-light activity. Additionally, metal doping positively influenced water decomposition. Water showed a tendency to remain dissociated in clusters doped with +4 and +5 valence cations, indicating enhanced catalytic potential. Among these, the Ta5+-doped cluster exhibited the highest reaction energy, suggesting that future studies should focus on the reaction energetics of +5 valence doped systems to better understand their role in photocatalytic efficiency.

A Novel High-Gain Cuk-Sepic Converter with Coupled Inductor for Renewable Energy Applications
    (Gazi Üniversitesi, 2025) Mu, S.; Ling, F.; Li, N.; Wang, J.; Garip, I.
    - The increase in photovoltaics, fuel cells, and power cells as a proportion of our energy structure can reduce dependence on traditional energy sources, which can result in energy conservation, emission reduction, and sustainable development. Power grid development has increasingly focused on integrating distributed energy and power grids. It proposes a technology for integrating the Sepic-converter and Cuk-converter. A primary winding is created from the Sepic’s intermediate energy storage inductor. A capacitor is added to the secondary winding to generate a voltage-doubling structure. Performance and efficiency are improved with this method. It maintains the continuous input and output current characteristics of the Cuk converter, making it compatible with DC buses and photovoltaic arrays. It is the passive clamping capacitor that absorbs the leakage inductor energy. The parasitic capacitance and switch are thereby reduced, and the switch is also subject to low voltage stress. This paper explores the working principle, performance parameters, and operating conditions of the converter in detail. Finally, an experimental platform was used to produce a 150W prototype. Experimental results were used to test and verify the validity of the previous theoretical analysis. © (2025), (Gazi Universitesi). All rights reserved.

Accreditation of Communication Education in Turkiye: Research on the Views of Administrator Academicians in Accredited Programs
(Istanbul Univ, Fac Communication, 2023) Kaygusuz, Erdinc; Kaygusuz, Ferhat Erdinç
The subject of this study is an examination of how communication programs are accredited in Turkiye in the context of the views of administrator academicians. The research aims to explore the views of administrator academicians who are deans, vice deans, or heads of departments in their institutions regarding the accreditation of communication education in Turkiye. The study interviews 11 administrator academicians working in accredited undergraduate programs under communication faculties or the other faculties in which communication programs are included Turkiye, with the study sample being selected using multi-stage sampling. Proportional stratified and purposive sampling was also used to ensure that the groups in the universe are represented in proportion to their weights. Although minor problems exist in practice, accreditation has been concluded to play a developing role for institutions. Accordingly, accreditation allows institutions to renew, to correct the deficiencies in their organizational chart, to update the curriculum, to strengthen the teaching staff, to increase physical environments and opportunities, and to develop financial resources. In this respect, accreditation in communication education in Turkiye is seen as a concrete output rather than a corporate reputation provider. The findings support other studies that have focused on the benefits of accreditation.

An Approach to Predicting the Effect of Shadows from Surrounding Buildings on the Performance of Solar Photovoltaic
(Gazi Üniversitesi, 2025) Yongkuan, S.; Wei, N.; Shanwu, Z.; Garip, I.; Zhang, Shanwu; Sun, Yongkuan
For a photovoltaic system in an urban building, building shadow occlusion is an often-encountered problem, photovoltaic array covered area will change with time, resulting in the photovoltaic array output volt-ampere performance curve being also different with time. With the engineering analytical model of silicon solar cells, the series-parallel of electrical circuits theory, and the solar Angle change formula, an approach to predicting the effect of shadows from surrounding buildings on the performance of solar photovoltaics is established. The simulation results show the difference of the PV array’s I-V and P-V performance curves with periods. An actual test is carried out for the completed photovoltaic project with building shadow occlusion, and the comparison with Matlab simulation I-V and P-V performance curve proves the predicting model can describe the output performance of the PV array with building shadow occlusion. © (2025), (Gazi Universitesi). Arendt and Rancière: Freedom, Emancipation, and Struggle
    (Istanbul Univ, 2025) Unlu, Seval
Arendt's and Ranci & egrave;re's political views are apt to be treated as the opposite. Arendt believes that politics is separate from other human activities and autonomous from them. On the contrary, Ranci & egrave;re believes that politics has no specificity in terms of realm, issue, orsubject. However, the tension between them points to some boundaries in contemporary political theory regarding expectations from politics and the quest to reappropriate it. Their conception of the social set limits political action in different ways. For Arendt, the meaning of politics is freedom, but she does not relate it to the struggle against the current inequalities. For Ranci & egrave;re, politics is a struggle for emancipation that verifies equality, but he separates it from new beginnings for the future. In this article, we analyze the positions of both theorists in contemporary political theory, which have similar boundaries despite the presence of some opposite themes. Thus, the purpose of this article is to examine, through a dialog between two thinkers, the connection between politics as freedom in Arendt and as emancipation in Ranci & egrave;re, focusing on the struggle to transform given unequal conditions.

Can Sustainability Reporting Make a Difference?: A Qualitative Analysis on Sustainability Reports of BIST Listed Agri-Food Companies in Turkey
(Ege Univ, Fac Economics & Admin Sciences, 2024) Gürsoy, Özgür Burçak; Akbas, Ilkay
Agri -business is a huge industry, including all operations from farm -level production to storage, manufacture, and distribution of agricultural commodities. This fact, together with worsening social and environmental conditions and pandemic crises, has added to a change in the perception of agriculture in economic construction. The following decades will most probably witness a resurgence of agriculture -based development recipes fed by social, environmental, and governance dimensions of sustainability. This article searches for the sustainability reports of agri-business firms listed in BIST in Turkey. A sampling includes 11 out of 64 listed agri-business firms having recent sustainability reports, which are examined by qualitative data analysis techniques with MAXQDA software. The first argument our findings support is that the agri-food sector is lagging in sustainability reporting compared to other sectors. Second, companies are more ready to comply with issues that are legally regulated. Third, environmental problems are more addressed than social and economic sustainability standards. This study also shows the relative unimportance of topics such as child labor, pesticide use, supply chain traceability, women entrepreneurship, and geographical indication, which can have positive impacts on the Turkish agricultural space if big companies integrate these topics more into their sustainability reporting processes. This article contributes to the literature on sustainability in general and reporting in the agri-food sector in particular.

Causes of Intimate Partner Homicide: Gender Differences in Empathy, Psychopathy, and Perceived Social Support
    (Kare Publishing, 2022) Topcu, A.L.; Görgülü, T.; Erden, G.
Objective: Intimate partner homicide (IPH) and attempted murder behaviors have increased in recent years. In addition, the causes of partner murder are affected by gender dynamics. This study aims to determine whether individuals who committed murder and attempted murder toward their partners differ in terms of empathy, psychopathy, and perceived social support and to determine the predictive variables of IPH toward their partners. Method: This study was carried out with a total of 123 participants (73 women and 50 men) from 10 different prisons. Demographic Information Form, Empathic Tendency Scale, Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were used. Results: A value of 82.19% of women and 60.97% of men were charged with killing their partners. Of these, 24% of women and 7% of men killed their partners by planning. The psychopathy scores of men (56.92±8.45) were found to be higher than women (52.73±8.98). The results of the logistic regression analysis indicate that the behaviors of women to kill and attempt to kill their partners are best predicted by physical violence from their partner, feelings of jealousy toward their partner, and perceived weak social support from a significant other and family. It was found that the best predictive variable for IPH in men was physical violence against their partners during their relationships. Conclusion: It has been evaluated that having insufficient social support and experiencing physical violence from their partners are associated with IPH among women. This result suggests that women use violence against their partners to protect themselves from violence. On the other hand, the physically violent behaviors of men toward their partners during their relationship are an important variable for IPH. © 2022 Yerkure Tanitim ve Yayincilik Hizmetleri A.S.. Comparison of Different Heuristics Integrated with Neural Networks: A Case Study for Earthquake Damage Estimation
(Istanbul Univ, 2022) Malkocoglu, Ayse Berika Varol; Orman, Zeynep; Samli, Ruya
Earthquakes are among the most challenging natural phenomena to predict. Most of these unpredictable earthquakes result in the loss of human lives and property. Seismologists can estimate the probable location and magnitude of such earthquakes. However, the actual time and extent of their impact remain unknown. If the effects of possible earthquakes can be predicted, quick and accurate decisions can be made. For this purpose, developing predictive models about earthquakes is a prevalent and vital issue in the literature. In this study, various Machine Learning (ML) algorithms were compared on a public dataset of earthquakes, which had occurred worldwide and had a local magnitude Ml >= 3, and the algorithm with the highest performance was selected and optimized with various other algorithms. The performances of the models were compared using different performance evaluation metrics such as accuracy, Mean Square Error, Root-Mean Square Error, precision, recall, and f1 score. As a result, it was observed that the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm optimized with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm produced the most successful result with an accuracy value of 0.82. Based on the obtained results, it is believed that this model can be used in different earthquake damage prediction studies and as a guide in emergency planning

The global COVID-19 pandemic has exerted profound physical and psychological tolls on healthcare professionals, underscoring the urgent need for their mental health support. The objectives of this research are twofold: first, to develop an e-psychological support program based on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy tailored specifically for healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic; second, to assess the program's effectiveness in reducing secondary traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and stress levels, as well as improving healthcare professionals' perception of coping with trauma. Designed as a randomized controlled trial, the study was conducted with 71 healthcare workers employed in a hospital in Gaziantep, Turkey. The developed e-psychological support program consists of six modules: stress model, self-monitoring skills, coping with anxiety, behavioral activation skills, and cognitive restructuring (two modules). The results showing a significant decrease in anxiety, depression, stress and secondary traumatic levels in the intervention group compared to the control group are encouraging. This suggests that the CBT-based e-psychological support program has the potential to have a positive impact on the mental well-being of healthcare professionals. Also, the improvement in healthcare professionals' perception of coping with trauma is an important outcome.CBT has a strong evidence base for treating mental health issues, and adapting it for the specific needs of healthcare workers during a crisis like the pandemic is a promising approach. The development of online interventions for healthcare professionals is valuable not only for the current pandemic but also for future crisis situations. These programs can serve as a template for addressing mental health needs during other global health emergencies.

(Galenos Publ House, 2025) Huseynov, Amil; Cicek, Sevim Nuran Kuslu
Objective: Denovo malignancy is a significant complication following kidney transplantation, attributed to prolonged immunosuppression. This study evaluates the incidence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of denovo malignancies in kidney transplant recipients. Material and Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 1200 kidney transplant recipients between 2016 and 2023. Patients were categorized based on the presence or absence of de novo malignancies. Statistical analyses were performed to identify risk factors, including age, sex, comorbidities, and immunosuppressive regimens. Patient and graft survival were assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis and the log-rank test. Results: Among the study population, 43 patients (3.6%) developed de novo malignancies. The most frequent malignancy types were non-melanoma skin cancers (27.9%) and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (18.6%). Patients with malignancies exhibited a lower three-year survival rate (83.7%) compared to those without malignancies (91.4%), though the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.067). Graft survival at three years was slightly lower in the malignancy group (84.0% vs. 88.7%, p=0.146). Older recipient age was identified as a significant risk factor (hazard ratio=1.03 per year, p=0.025). Conclusion: De novo malignancy remains a concern in kidney transplant recipients, particularly among older patients. Regular screening protocols, lifestyle interventions, and individualized immunosuppressive regimens are essential to mitigate risk and improve outcomes.

Detection of Damaged Structures from Satellite Imagery Processed by Autoencoder with Boruta Feature Selection Method
(AVES, 2023) Muzoglu, Nedim; Adiguzel, Ertugrul; Akbacak, Enver; Karaslan, Melike Kaya; Karaaslan, Melike Kaya
Many worldwide changing events, including meteorology, weather forecasting, disaster response, and environmental monitoring, are tracked by states or companies via satellite imagery. Early response to disasters is critical for human life. In these cases, artificial intelligence applications are also used to make rapid determinations about large geographical region. In this study, satellite images of flooded and undamaged structures in Hurricane Harvey were used. An autoencoder process has been applied to this dataset to reduce the noise in satellite imagery. AlexNet and VGG16 deep learning (DL) models are used to extract features from both datasets. The most effective features selected by the Boruta feature selection algorithm were classified with the support vector machine, and the highest classification accuracy of 99.35% was obtained. Since disasters involve the evaluation of very big datasets from large geographic areas, presenting the data with the smallest possible feature will facilitate the process. For this reason, by applying dimensionality reduction to the selected attributes, a 98.29% success was achieved in the classification with only 90 attributes. The proposed approach shows that DL and feature engineering are very effective methods to quickly respond to disaster areas using satellite imagery.

Ericksonian Hypnotherapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of RCTs
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2026) Çınaroğlu M.; Yılmazer E.; Noyan Ahlatcıoğlu E.; Çınaroğlu, Metin; Yılmazer, Eda; Noyan Ahlatcıoğlu, Esra
Ericksonian hypnotherapy (EH), a client-centered hypnotic approach characterized by indirect suggestion, individualized flexibility, collaboration, and the principle of Utilization, has seen increased interest as a therapeutic modality across diverse clinical settings. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of EH by synthesizing evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 2015 and 2025. Eight eligible RCTs (N = 676) were identified, spanning conditions such as acute pain, depression, grief, irritable bowel syndrome, disordered eating, and alcohol use. EH interventions consistently produced significant symptom reductions compared to waitlists or standard care, with a pooled standardized mean difference of 1.17 (95% CI: 0.70–1.64), indicating a large effect. Moreover, trials comparing EH to active treatments (e.g., CBT, motivational interviewing) revealed comparable efficacy, with pooled estimates supporting non-inferiority. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of these findings. Notably, some trials suggested that the indirect and personalized nature of EH may confer advantages in domains like grief and hypervigilance. Although evidence remains limited by sample size and heterogeneity, this review provides initial empirical support for EH and supports its inclusion in the evidence-based repertoire for both physical and psychological conditions. Future research should examine mechanisms of change and individual predictors of response to optimize the use of this distinctive hypnotic style. © 2026 by the authors.

Evaluation of the Descriptive Values and Occlusion Effects of Air and Bone Conducted Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Normal Individuals
(Springer, 2022) Tasci, Betul; Gencturk, Ertugrul; Serbetcioglu, Mustafa Bulent
Objective:This study was aimed to establish the descriptive statistical values of cVEMPs's responses which are evoked by air and bone conducted stimuli and to examine the effects of occlusion on bone conducted (BC) cVEMPs test. Methods:The study was carried out on 20 individuals (n = 40 ears), 11 women and 9 men, at the Medipol Mega University Hospital. cVEMPs tests were applied in five stages to the individuals who are volunteer to participate in this study. Firstly, the air conducted (AC) cVEMPs test was applied. Then, BC cVEMPs tests were applied in four different conditions with the aim of examining the occlusion effect. Results:Latency values of the AC cVEMPs response were 15.17 +/- 0.77 ms for P1 and 24.12 +/- 1.38 ms for N1 and 8.95 +/- 1.12 ms for interpeak latencies. P1N1 amplitude value was 149.73 +/- 75.00 mu V. VEMPs asymmetry ratio (VAR) was 0.16 +/- 0.16. Latency measurements of the BC cVEMPs response were 14.38 +/- 0.85 ms for P1 and 23.40 +/- 1.50 ms for N1 and 9.05 +/- 1.57 ms for interpeak latencies. P1N1 amplitude value was 107.58 +/- 54.08 mu V. VAR was 0.15 +/- 0.12. Both AC cVEMPs and BC cVEMPs parameters were demonstrated that there are not any significant differences between female-male and left ear-right ear. When AC and BC cVEMPs responses were compared, the mean P1 and N1 latencies of BC cVEMPs were significantly shorter than those of AC cVEMPs (p < 0.01). The mean amplitudes of AC cVEMPs were significantly larger than those of BC cVEMPs (p < 0.01). When the impact of the occlusion effect on cVEMPs parameters was examined, no statistical significance was found. Conclusion:As a result, it was thought that the BC cVEMPs, which is not widely used in clinics, might be used in the vestibular assessment of conductive hearing losses (CHL) in clinics, by obtaining descriptive values with this study. In addition, it was thought that it might be used as an auxiliary test to diagnose patients with hyperacusis who are disturbed by loud noises.

Exploring the Psychological and Social Dynamics of Steroid and Performance-Enhancing Drug (PED) Use Among Late Adolescents and Emerging Adults (16-22): A Thematic Analysis
(MDPI, 2025) Cinaroglu, Metin; Yilmazer, Eda; Noyan Ahlatcioglu, Esra
Background: Performance-enhancing drug (PED) use has become increasingly prevalent among adolescents and emerging adults, not solely for athletic advantage but as a psychological and sociocultural coping mechanism. In T & uuml;rkiye, where Westernized body ideals intersect with traditional values, the emotional and symbolic meanings of PED use among youth remain underexplored. Methods: This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews and reflexive thematic analysis to examine the subjective experiences of 26 Turkish adolescents and emerging adults (19 males, 7 females; ages 16-22) in Istanbul who reported non-medical use of steroids or other PEDs. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling in gym-adjacent communities across six urban districts. Interviews were conducted online, recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to identify emergent psychological themes. Results: Six interconnected themes were identified: (1) body-based insecurity and the fantasy of reinvention; (2) emotional regulation through bodily control; (3) secrecy as autonomy; (4) compulsive enhancement and dissatisfaction; (5) psychological dependency and regret; and (6) PED use as agency and protest. While male and female participants differed in aesthetic goals and social narratives, both groups framed PED use as a means of identity construction, emotional survival, and social validation. Participants did not perceive themselves as deviant but as strategic actors navigating a performance-driven culture. Conclusions: PED use among youth in urban T & uuml;rkiye emerges as a psychologically embedded coping mechanism rooted in emotional regulation, self-concept, and perceived control. Rather than a deviant behavior, it reflects an adaptive but precarious strategy for managing insecurity and achieving recognition during a critical developmental stage.

Finding Compromise Solutions for Fully Fuzzy Multi-Objective Linear Programming Problems by Using Game Theory Approach
(IOS Press, 2022) Temelcan, Gizem; Kocken, Hale Gonce; Albayrak, Inci; Gonce Kocken, Hale
Solving multi-objective linear programming (MOLP) problems and fully fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (FFMOLP) problems involves the trade-off process among several objectives. A new algorithm extended where FFMOLP problems are solved using a 2-player zero-sum game approach to deal with this case. Firstly, The FFMOLP problem is separated into a certain number of fully fuzzy linear programming (FFLP) problems and each is solved by applying any method. After forming a ratio matrix, a game theory approach is applied for finding the weights of objective functions and a weighted LP problem is constructed by these weights. Solving the weighted LP problem, a fuzzy compromise solution of the FFMOLP problem is found. Constructing different ratio matrices, it is also possible to obtain more than one compromise solution to be offered to the decision-maker(s). Some examples are given to show the applicability of the algorithm.

Future of European Security Policies: Is Geopolitical Europe Possible
(Ankara Univ European Union Research Centre, 2024) Ustun, Cigdem; Han, Ahmet K.
Since the aftermath of World War II, the pursuit of European autonomy in ensuring its security has been a constant topic on the European agenda, however never fully realized. The Lisbon Treaty facilitated Union representation as a legal entity and introduced Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) to deepen defense ties. Geopolitical ambitions increased with von Der Leyen's 2019 call for a Geopolitical Commission, preceding the Russia-Ukraine war. Global geopolitical shifts amplify the need for a robust European role. However, the EU's historical struggle in forging a strong security policy fuels skepticism. This study assesses the EU's foreign policy in the Mediterranean and Black Sea amidst regional turmoil, employing a neo-classical realist lens and a global perspective.

Gender Equality and Femvertising Practices in Advertisements
(Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, 2025) Yaman, Duygu; Songur, Ahmet
Female figures, frequently featured as the central element in product and service advertisements, are pivotal in shaping marketing messages. In the broader context of gender representation, the roles attributed to women, both traditional and modern, have undergone significant transformations in contemporary society. Feminism, as a key factor influencing modern role distribution, has led to the emergence of feminist marketing, which is often referred to in the literature as femvertising. Using a content analysis methodology, this study examines commercials, awarded across various categories by the EFFIE organisation in 2022. The goal is to explore whether the feminist marketing in these advertisements is driven by commercial interests or is aimed at empowering the female figure from a societal perspective. A comparative analysis was conducted between the commercials of the same brands on March 8th, International Women's Day. The content analysis revealed that, while the awarded commercials predominantly emphasise traditional gender roles, the commercials for International Women's Day focus more on modern role distribution. Additionally, while femvertising appears less frequently in the International Women's Day commercials, it is more prevalent in the other award-winning ads. To broaden the scope of the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with brands operating in Istanbul, which had received awards in the Mediacat 2022 Best Advertising Agencies category and were also included in the content analysis sample. The interviews were handled within the framework of a descriptive phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews were analysed through the MAXQDA program. They noted that the reason for the increase in femvertising application was that the brand's purpose was to create sympathy in the consumer and to make commercial profit. They stated that femvertising applications were advertising tactics. Another result of the study is that the concept of femvertising is perceived conceptually differently by advertisers and advertising agencies.
