Abstract
This study aims to examine the mediating role of social comparison and the moderating role of self-compassion in the predictive effect of social media use on body image. It was hypothesized that intensive exposure to idealized body representations, particularly on visually oriented social media platforms, may influence individuals' evaluations of their own bodies, and that social comparison and self-compassion may play significant roles in this process. The study was conducted using quantitative data collected online from adult participants. The relationships among social media use, social comparison, body image, and self-compassion were investigated. The findings revealed that the level of social media use significantly affected body image. In addition, a statistically significant relationship was found between self-compassion and body image. However, social comparison was not found to mediate the relationship between social media use and body image. Similarly, self-compassion did not demonstrate a moderating role in this relationship. These findings suggest that the effect of social media use on body image may operate primarily through a direct mechanism and that this relationship may not be explained to the expected extent by variables such as social comparison and self-compassion. Accordingly, the present study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the psychological processes underlying body image in the context of social media. It also highlights the importance of re-evaluating risk and protective factors on the basis of diverse individual and psychosocial mechanisms.
