Abstract
The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) applications has significantly increased the demand for low-latency, energy-efficient and reliable computation in edge computing environments. Task offloading has emerged as a key mechanism for intelligent resource allocation. However, determining the optimal offloading strategy remains challenging due to heterogeneous system resources, varying task requirements and dynamic workload conditions. This thesis investigates machine learning based approaches for intelligent task offloading in IoT edge computing networks, with particular emphasis on comparing supervised learning and reinforcement learning under both static and dynamic environments. Four supervised learning models and one reinforcement learning model were evaluated using multiple datasets, including ideal synthetic, realistic synthetic, IoMT and vehicular fog computing datasets. Model performance was assessed using both predictive metrics, including accuracy and macro-F1 score, as well as system-level metrics (latency, energy consumption, deadline miss rate and Quality of Experience (QoE) cost). The results demonstrate that supervised learning models perform effectively in static offloading environments where system conditions are stable and offloading decisions are independent. However, when dynamic load evolution and congestion effects are introduced, the reinforcement learning approach achieves lower long-term QoE cost and deadline miss rate, despite being less effective in terms of static classification accuracy. Overall, this thesis provides empirical evidence that the choice of learning approach should depend on the operational characteristics of the offloading environment. By clearly distinguishing between static and dynamic task offloading scenarios, the study contributes to the design of more adaptive and context-aware resource allocation mechanisms for IoT edge computing networks.
