Abstract
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between existential loneliness and emotional eating among young adults. In addition, the possible moderating role of rumination in this relationship was tested as an additional analysis. The study was conducted using a quantitative correlational research design. The sample consisted of 282 young adults between the ages of 18 and 30. Data were collected through a Personal Information Form, the Existential Loneliness Scale, the Ruminative Responses Scale, and the Emotional Eating Scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, mediation analysis, and moderation analysis were used to analyze the data. The analyses were conducted using jamovi and the jAMM module. The findings indicated a positive and significant relationship between existential loneliness and emotional eating. A positive and significant relationship was also found between rumination and emotional eating. Among the main variables, the strongest association was observed between existential loneliness and rumination. Regression analyses showed that existential loneliness significantly predicted both emotional eating and rumination, while rumination significantly predicted emotional eating. However, the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between existential loneliness and emotional eating was not supported. Similarly, the moderating role of rumination in this relationship was not found to be significant. Overall, the findings suggest that existential loneliness and rumination are associated with emotional eating among young adults; however, rumination does not appear to function as a sufficient explanatory mechanism in this relationship. These results indicate that emotional eating should be considered within a broader psychological framework, including emotion regulation difficulties, coping styles, stress, body image, and avoidance-related processes. The study contributes to the literature by addressing existential loneliness, rumination, and emotional eating together in a young adult sample. Keywords: existential loneliness, emotional eating, rumination, young adulthood, mediation analysis
