Book Part Aging in Turkey(Faculty of Economics Osijek, 2020) Kilic, Burak; Kilic, ZaferThis study covers the services offered to the elderly, individuals who work in this field, statistical data on aging in Turkey, and similar issues. The data in this study was collected from the literature review and from written sources. In the literature, the concept of age is divided into two: biological and chronological. Although chronological age is the same in all humans, biological age varies according to individuals. Chronological age is the number of years a person has been alive. Biological age is the representation of the biological step as a unit of time. Aging is the state where individuals gradually lose their physical and psychological power. The increasingly elderly population has also caused the academic environment to focus on the field of older people. Moreover, the increasing elderly population has accelerated the process of developing national policies and plans in countries and the process of producing services in line with the developed plans and policies. According to the aging data of the United Nations, there is an increase in the number and proportion of elderly individuals in the world. As a result, in this case, Turkey does not differ, so the elderly population is increasing with each passing day.Article An Approach to Predicting the Effect of Shadows from Surrounding Buildings on the Performance of Solar Photovoltaic(Gazi Üniversitesi, 2025) Yongkuan, S.; Wei, N.; Shanwu, Z.; Garip, I.For a photovoltaic system in an urban building, building shadow occlusion is an often-encountered problem, photovoltaic array covered area will change with time, resulting in the photovoltaic array output volt-ampere performance curve being also different with time. With the engineering analytical model of silicon solar cells, the series-parallel of electrical circuits theory, and the solar Angle change formula, an approach to predicting the effect of shadows from surrounding buildings on the performance of solar photovoltaics is established. The simulation results show the difference of the PV array’s I-V and P-V performance curves with periods. An actual test is carried out for the completed photovoltaic project with building shadow occlusion, and the comparison with Matlab simulation I-V and P-V performance curve proves the predicting model can describe the output performance of the PV array with building shadow occlusion. © (2025), (Gazi Universitesi). The growing literature on authoritarian neoliberalism examines the relationship between authoritarian governance and neoliberalisation, and interrogates how neoliberal reforms buttress the legal, administrative, and coercive power of states, creating leverage for ruling governments to enhance authoritarian forms of governance. While these studies highlight the vulnerability of these regimes and emphasise their crisis-laden character, there is a need for an extensive analysis of the dynamics of resistance in authoritarian neoliberal regimes to understand the limits and potentials of counter-hegemonic practices. Using in-depth case studies, this book demonstrates the repertoires of resistance against authoritarian neoliberalism in Turkey and discusses how different sections of society, including NGOs, bureaucrats, media, workers, marginalised communities and activists, challenge or reinforce neoliberal policies with their claims, tactics, strategies, and discourses. Drawing upon multidisciplinary scholarship from sociology, politics, law, media, urban development, and feminist studies, this book sheds light on the capacity of resistance to challenge the authoritarian forms of the neoliberal regime from within.Book Part Collecting Music as Information Management(Routledge, 2022) Sesigur, OnurBook Part Combinatory Play and Infinite Replay Underdefined Causality in the Neon Genesis Evangelion Anime Series and Games(Stockholm Univ Press, 2021) Bedir, Selen CalikBook Part Consolidating and Contesting Authoritarian Neoliberalism in Turkey: Towards a Framework(Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) Borsuk, Imren; Dinc, Pinar; Kavak, Sinem; Sayan, PinarDuring the early years of the ruling Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (Justice and Development Party, AKP), Turkey was seen as a burgeoning democratic power propped up by economic prosperity in line with the reforms for European Union (EU) accession and International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionality. However, 20 years later, it is considered an emblematic case of democratic backsliding in line with rising poverty and inequalities that have been amplified as a result of sweeping neoliberal reforms and authoritarian consolidation in the country. The recent literature has identified these concomitant and complementary modes of authoritarian governance and neoliberal policies in Turkey as 'authoritarian neoliberalism'. In this chapter, we discuss the dynamics of consolidation of authoritarian neoliberalism in Turkey as well as the acts of contention against it. Building mainly on the eight case studies presented in this volume, we put forward a framework that explains the consolidation of authoritarian neoliberalism in Turkey through the mechanisms of executive centralisation, autocratic legalism, cronyism, violence-fuelled rentier accumulation, criminalisation and stigmatisation, and contestations against authoritarian neoliberalism through strikes, protests, demonstrations, network building, litigation, everyday struggles, and armed acts of contention.Book Part The Crowdsourcing Concept as a New Media Application(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2020) Durmus, Sevil BektasIntroduction - In the twenty-first century, which is the age of communication and information, the time and space concepts have changed with new media technologies and changes have occurred in habits and ways of doing business using the Internet. In this respect, crowdsourcing concept comes first among the new applications with which internet users can share content. The crowdsourcing, which may be understood as `mass-based work' or `crowded resource', consists of a combination of `crowd' and `source', and refers to the use of a great number of human societies to do a common work. The crowdsourcing concept, used commonly as of the 2000s for different purposes, is included in the literature as a concept showing the power of crowds. It is a method in which communication and internet technologies are used with efficacy in the advertising and marketing fields. Purpose - The objective of the present study is to determine the pros and cons of the crowdsourcing concept through new media applications in the form of critical evaluations by examining sample case studies that use the crowdsourcing concept, which is becoming widespread in Turkey and in the whole world in recent years. Methodology - In this study, the `Case (Sample Event) Study Analysis', which is one of the qualitative research methods and which is a methodological approach that includes examining how the crowdsourcing system works indepth, will be used. Findings - Crowdsourcing is becoming a worldwide business model and allows anyone with free time and an internet connection to contribute to economic productivity. This study has discussed the importance of crowdsourcing for companies in contextual terms and has made predictions on how to make this concept become a better model in which fields.Article Dynamic Quantitative Imaging of the Masseter Muscles in Bruxism Patients with Myofascial Pain: Could It Be an Objective Biomarker(MDPI, 2023) Aydin Aksu, Sibel; Kursoglu, Pinar; Turker, Izim; Baskak, Fulya; Ozen Sutuven, Elifnaz; Meric, Kaan; Cabbar, FatihWe aimed to investigate whether the collaboration of shear wave elastosonography (SWE) and B-mode ultrasonography (US) could be offered as diagnostic tools to assess the presence, severity, and progress of bruxism, as well as a biomarker for the effectiveness of treatment in daily clinical practice. The study was designed as a quantitative evaluation of the masseter muscles (MMs) of the clinically diagnosed bruxism patients suffering from myofascial pain and MMs of the healthy individuals. Clinical examinations were made according to the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD), and pain was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS). Painful MMs with VAS scores >= 4 were assigned to Group A, and healthy MMs were assigned to Group B. Also, the MMs of the painful bruxers were analyzed based on wearing occlusal splints. Group A was divided into two subgroups as splint users (Group AI) and non-users (Group AII). All the participants were scanned with dynamic US and SWE to quantify the size and stiffness of the MMs. Measurements of each muscle pair while the jaw is in a resting position (relaxation) and clenching position (contraction) were recorded. The significant differences in stiffness and thickness became visible in the relaxation state. Bruxism patients with myofascial pain had significantly harder and thinner MMs than healthy individuals. During the relaxation, the mean thickness and elasticity values were 9.17 +/- 0.40 mm and 39.13 +/- 4.52 kPa for Group A and 10.38 +/- 0.27 and 27.73 +/- 1.92 for Group B, respectively. Also, stiffer MMs were measured in Group AII (38.16 +/- 3.61 kPa) than in Group AI (26.91 +/- 2.13 kPa). In conclusion, the combination of SWE and US using a dynamic examination technique has the potential to be a valuable tool for the management of bruxism patients suffering from myofascial pain.Conference Object The Effect of Job Satisfaction and Self-Efficacy to The Intrapreneurial Behaviors(Future Academy, 2019) Soran, Semih; Sesen, Harun; Guven, BurcuOrganizations need to constantly make innovations due to the rapid changes in the political, economic, technological and social areas. In this sense, entrepreneurship is one of the concepts that have become more valuable in recent times. Since those which cannot manage to change might lose their competitive advantages and hence organizational effectiveness, the organizations should act as an entrepreneur, discover and employ the individuals having high entrepreneurial spirit and establish a new organizational environment to promote intrapreneurship. Today, the intrapreneurship is now essential for both private and public bodies and agencies. The citizenry who are habituated to the innovative services provided by private firms expect the same services and modern approaches from public institutions. Therefore, public service providers should also reveal the entrepreneurial qualifications of their personnel. In this context, intrapreneurial employees play critical roles in organizational change and development. 175 information technology managers from various businesses have participated in this research. Data were analysed with correlation and regression analysis. The results showed that job satisfaction and self-efficacy are quite effective to explain intrapreneurial behaviours of technology managers. Feyza; Erkan, OnurSustainability of the service continuity provided in the optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks with dynamic traffic environment requires effective protection schemes in the connections. Various approaches have been introduced for path protection and wavelength assignment to ensure survivability in WDM networks. In this paper, we propose a two-step algorithm to designate dedicated-path and shared-path protection schemes. The heuristic-based algorithm utilizes a global labeling which considers service time and line protection information. Thus, the algorithm aims to increase resource utilization by improving the efficiency of shared path protection. The proposed algorithm is applied to USNET and EuropeNet networks and performance analysis in terms of blocking probability and resource utilization is carried out.Article An Evaluation on Growth Potential of the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SME) in Turkish Furniture Industry(Academic Journals, 2011) Aksu, Baki; Koc, K. Huseyin; Karademir, DevrimWith its increasingly expanding uses, the furniture industry has become a basic industrial sector in the world, especially in the developed countries, and it represents 2% of the total labour and 2% to 4% of the total production. The global foreign trade of furniture was around $174 billion in 2008. Though it has been growing fast, the furniture industry in Turkey is far from the level in the developed countries. In regard to the Turkish furniture industry, 99% of which consists of small and medium scale enterprises, just like all the other industries, few data are needed to be able to make accurate evaluations. The current conditions in the small and medium scale enterprises have been neatly described in this study. It tries to offer solutions to the problems, analyze the competition opportunities and shed light for future studies by eliminating inadequate data. It is the first study in the field since there has not been such research which covers the whole country except for the regional ones. Also, this project is supplementary to the studies carried out by the researchers on the large-scale enterprises, the whole industry is analyzed.Book Part Everyday Playlisting Practices(Routledge, 2022) Sesigur, OnurArticle Feature Selection for the Prediction of Tropospheric Ozone Concentration Using a Wrapper Method(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2011) Sakar, C. Okan; Demir, Goksel; Kursun, Olcay; Ozdemir, Huseyin; Altay, Gokmen; Yalcin, SenayHigh concentrations of ozone (O-3) in the lower troposphere increase global warming, and thus affect climatic conditions and human health. Especially in metropolitan cities like Istanbul, ozone level approximates to security levels that may threaten human health. Therefore, there are many research efforts on building accurate ozone prediction models to develop public warning strategies. The goal of this study is to construct a tropospheric (ground) ozone prediction model and analyze the effectiveness of air pollutant and meteorological variables in ozone prediction using artificial neural networks (ANNs). The air pollutant and meteorological variables used in ANN modeling are taken from monitoring stations located in Istanbul. The effectiveness of each input feature is determined by using backward elimination method which utilizes the constructed ANN model as an evaluation function. The obtained results point out that outdoor temperature (OT) and solar irradiation (Si) are the most important input features of meteorological variables, and total hydrocarbons (THC), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitric oxide (NO) are those of air pollutant variables. The subset of parameters found by backward elimination feature selection method that provides the maximum prediction accuracy is obtained with six input features which are OT, SI, NO2, THC, NO, and sulfur dioxide (SO2) for both validation and test sets.Article The Forest Products Industry in Turkey(Academic Journals, 2011) Aksu, Baki; Koc, K. Huseyin; Kurtoglu, AhmetThis study was conducted to analyze the structure of Turkey's wood products industry and to suggest ways to improve the country's competitive position in global markets. The 415 largest solid wood manufacturers were surveyed using questionnaires administered in personal interviews and by mail. Results reveal that forest product enterprises are geographically clustered in a few provinces. Thirteen percent of respondents are using outdated technology while 63% are using relatively new technology and 24% are using advanced technology. The 2001 economic crisis seriously affected the wood products industry with a 38% decrease in the number of employees and a number of shuttered facilities. Overall, the research indicates that the Turkish forest products industry is fragmented and is experiencing a number of obstacles to further development. Turkey has an established but generally inefficient forest products industry. This article gives an overview of the sector and offers recommendations for improvement. Results from this study can be useful to manufacturers and policy makers in Turkey and other countries with similar industry structures in short and long-term sectoral planning and development.Conference Object Happiness and Intention to Leave of Z Generation in Terms of Ihrp(Future Acad, 2019) Guler, Nihal; Acar, PinarThe main objective of this research is to reveal the effects of innovative human resources practices (IHRP) on the happiness and intention to leave on Z generation employees. The sample of the study consists of 198 Z generation employees in the banking sector. In our study mixed method (qualitative-quantitative) is adopted. Firstly, the qualitative research design was taken as a model. In this respect, qualitative interviews were conducted with Z generation employees and managers. The face-to-face interviews were conducted with a small sample of 25 subjects. The reason for face-to-face interviews is that participants can freely express themselves without limitation, so that more in-depth data can be collected. Data were categorized by Nvivo 11 qualitative data analysis. In the second part of the mixed method research strategy, the quantitative research method is used to measure the interaction between the variables in our theoretical model. Data were collected from 198 employees by means of survey method and analyzed with SPSS 20 package program. The findings of the study showed that happiness has a mediation effect on innovative human resources practices and intention to leave. Okan; Kursun, Olcay; Ozdemir, Huseyin; Demir, Goksel; Yalcin, SenaySulfur dioxide (SO2) is an issue of increasing public concern due to its recognized adverse effects on human health. Therefore, accurate SO2 prediction models are very important tools in developing public warning strategies. The goal of this study is to identify the relevance of meteorological and air pollutant variables using a classical and widely used measure of dependence, Shannon's Mutual Information (MI), and to build an accurate SO, prediction model using the relevant variables as inputs. Specifically, features ranked by MI measure are tested on how much joint predictive power they have of the target using a popular machine learning tool, support vector machines (SVM), and in comparison to multilayer perceptron (MLP), which is the most commonly used machine learning tool in previous studies for the prediction and analysis of air pollutants. It was found that the SVM model gave a higher correlation coefficient (r) and less root mean squared error (RMSE) than MLP for both test and validation sets. The predictive model used 6 input variables for both data sets as the relevant features for maximum SO, concentration prediction at time t+1, which are the average SO,, maximum SO2, outdoor temperature (OT), average nitrogen dioxide (NO2), average ozone (O-3), and average wind speed at time t. The results of this study indicate that MI can be used efficiently in determining the importance of input variables in the prediction of SO2 concentration and SVM is a popular machine learning tool well suited for use in air pollution modeling.Article Investigation the Effects of Treatment Plants on Heavy Metal Levels and Mutagenicity of Wastewaters(Parlar Scientific Publications (PSP), 2022) Dartan, Guler; Cevik, Mehtap; Aksu, Burak; Can, Zehra Semra; Keskins, Yasar; Yurdun, Turkan; Susleyici, BelginManagement of wastewater (WW) and protection of the aquatic ecosystem have become a major problem recently. Our objective was to determinate the chemical load and genotoxic potential of WWs before and after advance treatment, and also to foresee whether the pollutants harm the receiving environments where they were discharged. WW samples were collected from influent and effluent of an advanced wastewater treatment plant (AWTP) and discharge of School of Medicine (SoM). Spectrophotometric analyses showed that Pb levels in WWs were found to be over the cut off limit independent from seasonal change. Nitrogen (N) load is detected quite high before the treatment process. According to AMES test, mutagenic effect of AWTP in the absence of liver enzymes were found to be higher in influent (IR: 7.15; TA100) whereas lower in effluent (IR: 4.04; TA100). According to our results, advanced biological treatment might be insufficient in adequate elimination of Pb, N and P. However, further studies are required to validate our results.Book Part Is It Possible to Define Globalization in One Definition(Springer, 2018) Kivilcim, FulyaWhen approximately past 50 years of past experience considered; it can be defined as a period where bipolar system that dominates the world collapsed and instead, monopole system established and thus, depending on the development of communication and transportation technologies of capitalism, economic, political and cultural dimensions of the relations are changed and intensified among the societies. This period has led to the differentiation in the ways of perceiving the world and in the lifestyles of the societies. In this context, time-space perceptions of societies and the processes of meaning the world began to develop and differ. Thus, globalization emerged where the contrast between far-near is removed and dimension of cross-border interaction developed and the nation states which are important actors of the past periods left their power to local cities and regions. As it can be seen from this, the past time has been subject to a social transformation. Therefore, the concept of globalization has been formed where the contrast between far-near is removed and dimension of cross-border interaction developed. Definition of the concept of globalization in its simplest form is; convergence of countries and people by ignoring the distance between the distant and nearby places and having economic and social interaction with each other. An important element in the definition of globalization is; decisions taken at the local level and adopted policies has the power to pass other nations and influence them. Especially when the last three decades considered; the mankind history felt the power of globalization and it will continue to be felt more effective in the coming years due to the circumstances of the current period. Within this rapid change and development process; supranational organizations that are competitive in global market conditions have taken their place in the process as global actors with their areas of activity they are dominant, organizational structures, understanding of management, forms of competition and capital structures they have. In this study; access to the definition of globalization concept and its evaluation for the last five decades targeted within the framework of approaches to the concept of globalization by emphasizing rapid and radical change.
